Announcement of Boots Practice of Pharmacy Teaching & Development Unit, TCD
Boots has announced that it will fund a state-of-the-art teaching facility for pharmacy practice at The School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Trinity College Dublin.
The Boots Practice of Pharmacy Teaching and Development Unit, due for completion early next year, will include a range of modern facilities to ensure that pharmacy students are equipped with the necessary skills to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future. Stand-alone teaching stations will help students to become familiar with the more traditional tasks of dispensing and administration, whilst separate areas will be designed to provide training in advanced pharmacy services. A model pharmacy, incorporating both a dispensary and a ‘front of counter area’, will provide a realistic setting for the teaching of pharmacist-patient communication. This area will be observed both directly and through video technology from a separate communications skills training suite. The Unit will incorporate technology and facilities to support both interactive training on-site and the further development of e-learning opportunities.
The following statement was made on behalf of Boots by Mary Rose Burke, Chief Pharmacist for Boots (Ireland). “Boots is a pharmacy led business and pharmacy is at the heart of what we do. We have a long heritage in pharmacy, and have seen many changes, and the pace of change in pharmacy practice is faster now than ever before. It is only by investing in the future and embracing change that our profession will fully utilise its expertise to enhance patient welfare. Boots has long played its part in the education and development of pharmacists, through investing in Teacher Practitioners in each of the schools on Pharmacy in TCD, RCSI and UCC, and through internal structured programmes for pharmacy students and Interns. Education of the pharmacists of the future will be the key driver of this change and we are honoured to be associated with the development of the Boots Practice of Pharmacy Teaching and Development Unit in Trinity. Boots and Trinity have both long and trusted histories of excellence in the field of pharmacy, and this development will have profound impact on the pharmacists of the future”.
Helix Health has agreed to provide the complete IT requirements for the new Unit, including updates and maintanance to ensure that the systems in use by the student population reflect accurately the market changes, including the latest drug updates and information on drug interactions.
“The School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is delighted with this collaboration. The Boots Practice of Pharmacy Teaching and Development Unit will be a state-of-the-art facility that will allow us to provide the highest standard of professional training to pharmacists of the future. On behalf of our staff, undergraduate and postgraduate students I would like to thank Boots and Helix Health for their generous contributions to the project” said Professor Marek Radomski, Head of School, School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Trinity College.
